Le Mars, MMCRU boys win team titles at Unity track meet (2024)

ORANGE CITY — Le Mars Community won the Class A title while MMCRU brought home the Class B hardware at the Unity Knight Relays on Monday. Hinton and Gehlen Catholic also competed in the Class B portion of the event.

Le Mars wins several events en route to title

The Bulldogs went 1-2 in the 110 meter hurdles as Tegan Bogh took the top time of 15.75, a tenth of a second in front of teammate Wichieng Hosnyang in the field of eight hurdlers.

Le Mars had some success in the distance races. Trace Obbink won the 800 and 3200 distances for the team. He had a gap of over five seconds in the 800, which he claimed with a time of 2:07.00. Obbink won the 3200 in a time of 10:39.33, finishing about 17 seconds in front of the next runner in the race.

Aaron Lee finished second in a close 1600 race. He finished in 4:51.85, just behind the 4:51.39 time from Unity Christian’s Tyler Rozenboom.

Le Mars opened the meet with a win in the sprint medley relay. Jayden Nelson, Israel Beltran, Quinn Laskie and Andrew Grant posted a time of 1:40.88 which was just over two seconds faster than the next-best time in the race.

Le Mars won the 4x400 by nearly four and a half seconds as Tate Murphy, Alex Allen, Tycen Augustine and Nelson finished in a time of 3:38.07.

The 4x100 team finished less than a tenth of a second behind Sioux City North. Bogh, Wichieng Hosnyang, Grant and Beltran clocked a time of 45.06 in the race to place second.

The Bulldogs were runner-up in the distance medley relay. Bowen Rieken, Asher Moss, Teagen Kasel and Lee completed the race in 3:58.46, trailing only Unity Christian’s time of 3:51.86.

Wanding Hosnyang was runner-up in the high jump with a 6-06 height. Jesse Van Kalsbeek of MOC-Floyd Valley won with a height an inch better.

Le Mars placed third and fourth in the 400 meter dash. Beau Wadle (55.91) and Alex Allen (56.32) finished a few seconds behind the winning time of 52.48 from Unity’s Landon Meerdink.

Seth Vander Sluis was third in the discus with a toss of 122 feet. He was 10 and a half feet behind the winning throw. Evan Jalas was sixth with a throw of 111 feet.

Mason Pippett was fourth in the long jump at 18-07.75 while teammate Brett McInnis was sixth with a leap of 18-03.50 as the team scored double points in the event. The winning jump of 20-03.75 came from Dylan Maasdam of MOC-Floyd Valley.

Distance races, field events lead MMCRU to team title

MMCRU won the Class B title behind strong performances from athletes in the distance races and field events.

Lucas Braun won both jumping events. He topped out at 6-02 in the high jump, four inches above the next-best height in the event. He added a win in the long jump with a distance of 20-07.25. He won that event by over a foot.

Mitchell Schnepf claimed the win in the discus with a toss of 141-07. Teammate Brayden Dunn was third with a throw of 114 feet. Schnepf took the runner-up spot in the shot put with a mark of 46-10. He was a foot and a half behind the winning distance from Western Christian’s Taeten Kollis.

Kaden Galles (10:44.81) and Clint Staab (11:41.61) had the fastest two times in the 3200 and teammate Karsen Galles (12:32.15) was fourth in the field of eight. Those three were all in the top six of the 1600, led by a second place time of 5:09.98 from Kaden Galles. Sibley-Ocheyedan’s Ben Byers won that event with a time of 4:36.88.

The team scored double points in the 800 as Wyatt Alesch was second in 2:10.29 and Brandon Dreckman was fourth in 2:15.23. David Poppen of Sibley-Ocheyedan won the event with a time of 2:07.60.

The Royals picked up a win by just over half a second in the distance medley relay. Grant Prescott, RJ Krier, Gage Johnson and Kaden Galles completed the race in 3:57.50. The same group was runner-up in the 4x800 with a time of 9:08.31, trailing Sibley-Ocheyedan’s 8:44.17 time.

The team’s other event win came in the 400 meter hurdles as Johnson posted the only sub-minute time of 59.60 seconds.

In the non-hurdle 400, Jace Colling was third for the Royals with a time of 55.29 seconds, not quite two seconds behind the winner.

Hinton finishes second in Class B

Hinton was the runner-up in the Class B team standings.

“Some very good times for the wind,” Hinton coach Steve Diediker said.

The Blackhawks won the 4x100 in a time of 44.72 seconds as Will Hagestrom, Ty Jones, Garrett Lindley and Daniel Blackwell handled the baton. Blackwell (11.24) and Hagestrom (11.49) were third and fourth in the individual 100 meter dash.

Hinton’s other relay win came in the shuttle hurdle. Lindley, Logan Coffee, Kyle Leary and Gabe Anderson posted a time of 1:07.93, about a half second faster than runner-up Central Lyon.

The Blackhawks finished in second place in the 4x400 with a time of 3:40.81 from Micah Robins, Jackson Kounkel, Cole Friessen and Anderson. Sibley-Ocheyedan won the race with a time of 3:39.14. Kounkel was fourth in the individual 400 with a time of 55.81 seconds.

Hinton also placed second behind the Generals in the sprint medley relay with a time of 1:42.28, just over a second behind the top time. Blackwell, Jones, Lindley and Robins were members of the relay.

Hinton added third place finishes in the 4x200 and 4x800 relays.

In the field events, a second place discus throw finish led the Blackhawks. Carson Divis reached 117-02 with his best attempt.

Brooks Binneboese ended third in the shot put at 46-06.50, just under two feet behind the top mark of the meet.

Hagestrom was third in the long jump at 19-02.50, not quite a foot and a half behind the best distance of the meet.

“A couple days recovery and we host our home meet,” Diediker said. “The kids are looking forward running at home after losing last year’s meet to the weather.”

Kallsen, McCarty win events for Gehlen

Gehlen Catholic had a few event wins at the meet. Chance Kallsen brought home gold in the 400 meter dash with a time of 53.58, finishing just in front of the 53.70 time from the runner-up in the event.

Cole McCarty was champion in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 15.95. McCarty added a runner-up finish in the long jump at 19-04.

Gehlen ended second in the distance medley relay with a time of 3:58.09, just over half a second behind the winning MMCRU team. Kale Pearson, Ashton Budden, Alex Peters and Zac Harpenau were runners on the relay.

The Jays were third in the 4x100 as Pearson, Kallsen, Jack Roberts and McCarty finished in 45.11.
