Quebec Issues Spring Thaw Dates Quebec's Ministry of Transportation has published the anticipated thaw period dates for the three Thaw Zones across Quebec. Today the WA Minister for Transport, Hon, Rita Saffioti announced upgrades to level crossings in regional Western Australia.All 87 level crossings in WA with Give Way control will be upgraded.- 74 Give way signed crossings will be upgraded to Stop Sign controls, at an estimated cost of $370,000,- 7 Give way signed crossings will be upgraded to active flashing light controls, at an estimated cost of $6.16 million,- 6 Stop Sign controlled crossings will be upgraded to active flashing light controls, at an estimated cost of $5.28 million.All but one of these crossings is in regional areas.In monetary terms this isn’t a great step forward because it’s not an increase in the budget allocation of $20 million over 4 years. However in terms of attitude, it is a significant acceptance by the Government and its departments of the need and opportunity to improve level crossing safety.This change is a great credit to the families and friends of victims of level crossing crashes around Australia particularly the indomitable Lara Jensen and Merrilea Broad who have argued for better level crossing safety for more than 20 years.It is also a great credit to MP’s who truly represent their constituents like Hon. Mia Davies and Hon. Shane Love, and the media led by Cally Dupe and Cecile O'Connor.This campaign is proudly supported by a growing number of organisations keen on improving regional level crossing safety, including:Country Women's Association of Western Australia Inc (CWA WA)Country Women's Association of NSW (CWA NSW) Western Roads FederationThe Nationals WAWAFarmersNational Farmers' FederationWA Local Government Association (WALGA)Australian Local Government AssociationAustralian Trucking AssociationTRANSAFE WANorthern Territory Road Transport AssociationQueensland Trucking Association Ltd478 level crossing in WA still won’t have active protection, so there is still several more things to be done. A critical junction between regional Hunter and Newcastle city, and the national highway network, urgent repairs at Tarro Bridge literally stopped the region. By day two of lane closures, motorists were making decisions to bypass roadworks and clogged roads far and wide. Motorists turned to public transport, with train station carparks on the Hunter Line soon at capacity. An additional return rail service from Maitland to Newcastle provided commuters with an option. Great news this service will be sustained for the moment. But with major roadworks to come for years with the M1 to Raymond Terrace and Newcastle Inner City Bypass, more disruptions to the road network will be the price of progress. This could be seized as a catalyst for transformational change in commuter preferences and behaviour to get more people out of cars and on to public transport. For public transport providers to work with the NSWGovernment and councils on:🚎 providing more services on existing infrastructure🚕 getting people that first and last mile to train stations, bus stops and transport interchanges🚲 more active transport to replace short trips that would otherwise be made by car🚉 addressing personal barriers to more use, including safety, accessibility and digital blackspots. The worst impacts of the Tarro Bridge emergency works may be over today. What we need now is a plan for tomorrow and the years following that anticipates future disruptions and achieves that step change from cars to public transport this region has been talking about for years.An action-oriented taskforce could make more headway on this regionally-significant priority than has able to be achieved in the past. This is an interesting article, and the data certainly seem to point to the conclusion that further improvement in the Australian road toll is going to take a different approach to transport.What do you think?
