As the title suggest, I personally believe yes and no. On one hand I do appreciate how balanced the fights are when it comes to allowing the boys and girls take part in the battles just as much as the next. Erza for example literally gets to fight many of the strongest enemies and while Lucy gets sidelined a bit now and then, there are moment where her abilites are put to good use to help everyone.

But then of course the serie is heavily critized too for its overuse of fanservice which often the girls falls victim too. I don´t mind it if its just a little bit as I do have a guilty pleasure for it but it kinda becomes annoying when it ruins certain girls moments to shine.

However I do appreciate that apart from Juvia most of the girls do have their own goals and interests that does not completely involve romance with a guy and so on.

I think that most of the main Girls are well written. I just think they are extremely inconsistent and sometimes act out of character. For me it's also Yes and No. Sometimes rly good and sometimes Ok-Bad

Fairy Tail is the model example of a shonen that has a decent female cast—with a few of the female characters in particular being quite good—that is held back from being a cast of primarily great female characters by the excessive amount of fanservice and objectification they are put through.

Yes definitely I think it has a pretty decent female cast especially compared to other shounen at the time if you’ll allow me go in depth about the female characters and also
SPOLERS for anyone who hasn’t watched.

Lucy is probably the most inconsistent, and the one most affected by the to much fanservice complaint and in the beginning she was just alright, but at the end of the Alvarez empire arc during the fight with Zeref where she saves natsu and her stepping up to her dad and his death while a bit cliche I thought they were both were Lucy at her best.

Erza is a bit tough for me to talk about because she was pretty good especially in the beginning she was my favorite character, but the show just kept going and I feel like she became less interesting I not saying she doesn’t have great moments after the first season but I the think the tower of heaven was peak Erza and the Kyouka was the most underwhelming fight Erza ever had.

Wendy is also pretty good especially in the oracion seis and Tartaros arcs her backstory is heartbreaking and I’m glad Erza was the one to invite her into Fairy Tail I also like the brother sister dynamic she has with Natsu. I just don’t like how much they sexualize her.

Juvia is one of my favorite characters in FT just because of how hilarious she is. There so many great moments with her like when she got that potion to infatuate Grey, killing Grey’s father, her first meeting with Grey, and their union raid. I can’t see why someone would find her annoying but I love her.

And finally Mavis she and Zeref are some of the best characters in FT her meeting Zeref only to die when kissing, creating Fairy Tail, and the second she shared with Zeref are all great moments she is probably my favorite female character in FT.

If you read this all then thank you.

Honestly, if the fan-service was taken out of the story, I think FT would have the best written females in a shonen anime/manga.

My biggest criticism in this regard is the relative lack of substantial development the main cast goes through, and that's by no means exclusive to the female cast. I don't think they are more poorly written than the male cast, but they do suffer from the same problem of having a very narrow personality based on one or two character quirks. Erza is comically strong and socially inept. Lucy is relatively rational and dispropotiinately targeted for fanservice. Juvia is obsessed with Gray. The arcs they appear in gesture at development beyond these traits, but it never meaningfully changes them, in my opinion. I want to like a lot of these characters, and there are some who I think avoid this problem more so than others (like Wendy and Levy), but it was something I noticed that started to bother me the longer the series continued.

For a show where the main character is a girl, it does alright.

Imo as a long time anime and FT fan I think it has a relatively good female cast, especially compared to most other Shonen of its time. The only Shonen of that era that rly had well written female characters was One Piece and I’d say FT had the 2nd best. Naruto’s female development is nonexistent, and Bleach only has a few standouts like Yoruichi(who’s rly just a badass and nothing much else). FT actually consistently gave the girls just as many big fights and arcs as the guys and for the main ones kept them relevant the whole story. I agree the tropes and fanservice hold them back sometimes but overall it doesn’t usually detract from their serious development moments and characters.

@Gabygogo Gintama, FMAB, Attack on Titan, One Piece and Hunter x Hunter would like to have a word.

But yeah, fanservice aside, Fairy Tail does have well written female characters for the most part. I did not like how the Erza x Jellal relationship was handled towards the end though.

Idk about HxH, it rly only has like 1 noteworthy female character(Bisky and maybe Palm). The rest are hardly relevant most of the time and definitely don’t get much actual development.

I also just don’t personally like most of AOTs female cast tho I agree they’re mostly well written. Mikasa in particular I’ve just always felt disdain for.

@ToG25thBaam Haven’t seen One Piece, Gintama, or Hunter x Hunter. FMAB is forever in its own tier so I kind of forget about comparing it to other Shonen 🤣. But don’t get me started on AOT, I haven’t watched any of the final season yet, but the only women I like on the show are Hange and Sasha and Sasha has the whole “always eating” gag, I really don’t remember much about her outside that. Maybe that opinion will change with the final season but 🤷🏻‍♀️

Theres pros and cons I think. Some have some pretty cool origin stories, like Erza. However at the same time it doesnt go into depth as much as one may like. For instance, Erza has all these different types of armor, but a lot of the time we only see them being effective in combat once or twice and we never see where she acquires the armor.
I dont think that the female characters are written any worse than the male, but at times I wished that they went into more depth for certain characters and whatnot.
Like for instance Demia Vesta. iirc she randomly became imbued with the power of a god her ancestors worshipped. That was so cool, and yet she like most of the new characters in the final season, didnt get enough screentime to really flaunt their personalities and abilities and whatnot. maybe Im just forgetting a lot of stuff. The Final season pissed me off cause it didnt really seem that well thought out and the characters halfway through were like "we must end this war, its taken so many lives", but the only people ik who died were Mavis and Zeref, who were already supposed to be dead.

(Ignoring the fanservice) I think it has a great range of female characters for the most part. For example, they have crazy strong ones like Erza and Mira while they show crazy smart ones like Levy and Mavis. It’s nice to see a breadth of personalities and strengths. They are given development more or less. It’s nice that they also show their flaws. The only ones I don’t like are the ones who have no personality, like Lisanna. Or the ones with one note personalities like Sherry who is all about “love”.
