Self care is so important – especially for busy Moms. For most of us, even taking a few minutes to soak in a nice bath is considered a treat. That’s why I love making a sugar scrub at home. It’s a treat that doesn’t take very long to do so I can indulge whenever I want. But I like pretty things and most sugar scrub recipes are not pretty. These DIY sugar scrub bars, however, are very pretty – and indulgent! – when you make them for yourself.

If you have dry skin, this sugar scrub recipe and the bars I’m about to show you are perfect for exfoliating dry skin. Just wet your skin and rub the bar across it. It removes dry skin and can bring new life to areas that you thought were long covered under the dry and rough skin.

DIY Sugar Scrub Bars

They are perfect for areas that are hard to keep soft such as elbows and the heels of your feet. When you make these DIY sugar scrub bars, you can make them as a homemade Valentine’s Day gift by using a silicone heart mold like this one HERE .

However, you can make them in any shape you want so they’ll fit any occasion. I have even used square soap molds like THESE to make them in a bar shape. Cut large bars in half and you’ve got a frugal beauty item that fits in the palm of your hand!

Do sugar scrub recipes include essential oils?

Yes, a good sugar scrub recipe will include a mixture of essential oils to give the sugar scrub a great scent and other benefits. For these, I get the majority of my ingredients from Thrive Marketand use Simply Earth Essential Oils.

When you shop at Thrive Market, you save up to 20% off your first 3 orders so it can make things much cheaper than normal. I get most of my organic items from them. Plant Therapy is where I use Simply Earth Essential Oils from. I love that the oils are 100% pure oils, but that I don’t have to pay huge prices for them. They’re the same quality oils that the more expensive companies put out.

Unlike most sugar scrub recipes, this one is not stored in a jar. I’m sure you noticed that just from the photos.

Instead,l we’ve created an easy to use bar that uses a melt and pour soap base. The bar makes this so easy to gift and is always well-loved by those who receive it!

Which essential oil should I use for this sugar scrub?

One of the things I love about this sugar scrub recipe is that it can be customized in any way you want! This means that you can use any combination of essential oils when you make your own!

A few combos you may want to try are:

You will need: Each supply list makes approx 5-6 bars depending on your mold size.

Supplies Needed:

To begin, shred the melt and pour soap base using a cheese grater or food processor. As always, don’ use any equipment with essential oils that may come into contact with food. Some oils leave a residue and are not safe internally.

In a double boiler, melt the shredded melt and pour soap base. If you don’t have a double boiler, you can put one together by sitting a small metal mixing bowl on top of a medium saucepan of boiling water.

Once the melt and pour soap is melted, add the coconut oil and stir until it is melted and fully incorporated into the soap base.

Once the coconut oil is melted and mixed in well, add the food coloring if you’re using it until you have a uniform color that is the shade you want.

Next, remove the pot from the heat add the sugar to the mixture. Stir until it is well combined. It will be a slushy consistency when it is mixed well enough.

Once you’ve mixed in the sugar, add 4-5 drops of the essential oil scent of your choice. 4-5 drops should be enough, but if not, you can add up to 8 total without worrying too much about having too much oil in it.

Pour the sugar scrub mixture into your molds and allow to dry for 1-2 hours before popping your bars out of the mold. If your sugar and soap mixture gets too thick, microwave and stir in 10 second bursts until you are able to pour it again.
