So you've signed the lease, submitted the checks, and finally possess the keys to a shiny new building. Once you've taken a beat to bask in the excitement (and perhaps sigh in relief that your housing search is over), it's time to make your new spot feel like a home. Our number one design tip? Use removable wallpaper, the stress-free and (relatively) inexpensive way to give any white box room an instant facelift.
"I love using peel-and-stick wallpaper, especially in rental spaces where the investment for traditional paper might not be worth it," explains designer Ariel Okin. But whether you rent or own your space, peel-and-stick wallpaper offers countless styling possibilities—and not just when it comes to your walls, either. "I use it on ceilings, on the backs of bookshelves, and in butler's pantries for a pop of unexpected pattern," adds Okin. Alongside bold prints, there are also plenty of options in more classic prints and finishes, so you can find a look that really vibes with your artistic vision.

Rifle Paper Co. Juniper Forest Wallpaper
Pros
- High-quality for the price
Cons
- More than one person required for installation
Well-reviewed and reasonably priced, this moody print features a mix of berries and leaves and comes in two colorways. The finish is matte, so you don't have to worry about any glare happening if you're hanging this wallpaper in a sunny room. Since the pattern is more elaborate, some reviewers note it might take a little longer to align each panel—but if you put aside a few hours, it's well worth the effort.
Due to this paper's bold print and saturated hue, we recommend installing it in an entryway or office to create a jewel box effect.
Dimensions: 20' x 27'' | Pattern Match: Drop | Color Options: Two
A Wayfair reviewer says: "Beautiful, we've already gotten so many compliments! More blue than green, but perfectly matches Farrow Ball Studio Green paint. Went up easily, trimmed easily, easy to line up the pattern and repeat."
Pros
- Comes in large sheets that are ideal for big areas
Cons
- Expensive
Embrace the eye-catching pattern-of-the-moment with this two-tone checkered print. Like the rest of Backdrop's wall coverings, this design features original artwork and is printed on a slightly textured material for a handmade look; in fact, painterly details and subtle irregularities in the color give it a distinctly bespoke feel. While this pick is definitely pricey, it comes with a complimentary plastic smoother and utility knife to make the installation process easier.
If you want to go for a complete room makeover, Backdrop also recommends paint pairings for each of its wallpapers. Coat any doorframes, windows, or moldings in the suggested matching colors for a cohesive design that requires minimal planning.

Pros
- Designed to be water- and stain-proof for minimal maintenance
Cons
- Print and color may vary slightly by roll
For the decorator on a budget, this print delivers maximum impact without putting a dent in your wallet. Priced at just $18 per roll, it's a good entryway option if you're new to peel-and-stick wallpaper and don't want to risk an investment. According to reviewers, this pick is also easy to cut and install thanks to its grid and measurement details on the backing paper.
We think the charming tropical print would be perfect for a nursery or kids' room, offset by white or wicker furniture. Because it's a splashier pattern, it could also work well to refresh smaller, more unexpected spaces—like a walk-in closet.
Dimensions: 9.7' x 17.3'' | Pattern Match: Straight | Color Options: One
An Amazon reviewer says: "It’s heavy enough to be strong but wasn’t too thick. I used it to paper the inside of my china cabinet in my kitchen. It took two hours to complete this project, which doesn’t seem like much time to me."

West Elm Grasscloth Wallpaper
Pros
- Moisture-resistant finish
Cons
- Not designed for use on textured surfaces
The answer to a neutral room? Texture. Grass cloth is a great way to add dimension to your home without compromising your calming color palette. This removable vinyl wallpaper mimics the look of grass cloth, with a hint of metallic thread woven throughout for even more depth.
Because it's made to be steam-resistant, this paper can handle potentially humid environments, like a bathroom or kitchen. Plus, the print would look right at home with cream-colored cabinetry and natural wood accents. Just wipe off any spills or splatters with a damp cloth if needed.

This paper is made from poly-woven fabric, with a matte finish and Greenguard Gold-certified ink that's proven to be safer for both your pets and family.
Featuring a vibrant palette and stripes of various sizes, this paper can easily add visual interest to your space. Play up the unexpected element by installing it on a ceiling. Or, since it's fade- and stain-proof, consider placing this paper in a highly trafficked area like a hallway or kid's bedroom.

Tempaper Forest Toile Wallpaper
Pros
- Pattern is timeless
Cons
- Intricate print may make cutting around outlets difficult
If you love a vintage vibe, toile wallpaper can instantly provide some old-school charm. Tempaper's take on the classic style features an ornate tree landscape and comes in three colorways—including a more versatile dusty blue and white version. This removable wallpaper is also washable, re-positionable, and moisture-resistant, so even if your space is filled with antiques, it'll be one part of your decor that you don't have to be too precious with.
This style could work in a multitude of rooms, but we'd choose to place it in a dining room as an elegant backdrop for dinner parties. If nothing else, it'll give you an excuse to stock up on vintage tableware.

Best Botanical Removable Wallpaper
Chasing Paper Climbing Vine Wallpaper
Pros
- Minimalist-friendly option
Cons
- May be tricky to get the spacing exactly right in a larger room
Botanical but not overwhelmingly so, this vine-printed peel-and-stick wallpaper offers a more pared-back approach to a greenery-themed look. Okin particularly loves this pattern used in conjunction with grasscloth: "They would be gorgeous in the same room, either mixed on ceilings and walls, or with one used in a bedroom and the other in the corresponding bathroom," she says.
While this print is delicate enough to work in a bedroom, you may also consider placing it from floor to ceiling for a slightly bolder vibe. It may take more effort to measure and align, but once you've got it down, your room will have the feel of a tranquil garden oasis.

Best Marbled Removable Wallpaper
Room Mates Byromville Marble Wallpaper
Pros
- Paper is thick and sturdy for durability
Cons
- Lining up the seams takes effort
Inspired by handmade Florentine marbling paper, this metallic peel-and-stick wallpaper from Room Mates is supremely elegant. Reviewers note that it's easy to apply and re-position despite its heftier weight, making it a great option for beginners who may need a little wiggle room for making mistakes.
We love the idea of pasting this paper inside kitchen cabinetry or behind open shelving in the living room to create a tiny vignette for your collectibles.
Dimensions: 20' x 27'' | Pattern Match: Drop | Color Options: Two
A Perigold reviewer says: "The quality of this paper is really top notch—it's very thick and gives a real wallpaper look. While there is some sheen to the gold parts of the pattern, the rest of the paper is matte—which adds to its elegance. Since we were working in a small space, I had to hang it alone, and it was very doable."

Lulu and Georgia Grosgrain Stripe Wallpaper
Pros
- Safe for use in bathrooms and other humid areas
Cons
- Not returnable
Yes, Sarah Jessica Parker has a wallpaper collection, and it includes this quintessential nod to prep. Inspired by grosgrain ribbon, this option comes in four polished colorways and even features tiny ruffled details on the ridge of every stripe. Each roll is also made-to-order, using a non-toxic, low-VOC paper that's moisture-resistant up to a certain level.
Worried that navy stripes lean too nautical? Remember that pattern play is your best friend here. To mitigate any potential maritime vibes, consider styling this removable wallpaper with other decor featuring stripes of various colors and sizes.
Dimensions: 4.4' x 26.25'' | Pattern Match: Straight | Color Options: Four
Pros
- Elegant, hand-painted design
Cons
- Semi-gloss finish might be too reflective in some rooms
Think of this avian-themed wallpaper as an affordable alternative to Gucci's heron print design. The smooth vinyl option features delicately hand-painted white cranes and a marbled backdrop that will add depth to your space. Keep in mind that the finish is not quite matte, so it'll reflect light, rather than absorb it.
We think the serene motif would look great in a bedroom, but some reviewers say they've also styled it in their bathrooms. If you opt for the latter method, choose a guest bathroom or powder room to minimize the risk of humidity damage.
Dimensions: 18' x 20.5'' | Pattern Match: Drop | Color Options: Two
An AllModern reviewer says: "My first time doing peel- and-stick. The paper is a good weight, allowing you to peel back and readjust as necessary. The website suggestion for the number of rolls needed was spot on."

Smart Tiles Peel and Stick Backsplash
Pros
- Lots of color options
Cons
- May need to order multiple sheets when covering a larger surface
We'd be remiss not to include a removable backsplash on our list, and this version makes the cut for its resemblance to Zellige tiles—a popular yet pricey ceramic imported from Morocco that's beloved for its glossy, slightly imperfect look. Each affordable set from Smart Tiles comes in a pack of five.
If you have a tiny rental kitchen or a bathroom in need of sprucing up, these shiny squares are a great way to add some pizazz. They're resistant to humidity and heat from the stove, too, and reviewers note they adhere well to both tile and drywall.
Dimensions: 9" x 9'' | Pattern Match: Straight | Color Options: Eight
An Amazon reviewer says: "Loved these! Easy to use and cut. They went straight onto my old tile backsplash, no problem sticking on. Look great from far and close as well."

What to consider before shopping for removable wallpaper
Scale: "I like to go bold in smaller spaces, like a powder room or pantry, to give that space a maximum 'wow' factor," says Okin. "In larger spaces, patterns that are a bit wider in scale and read as less busy can be better, so that the eye doesn't feel too crowded." For bigger areas, Okin also suggests opting for neutral-adjacent prints, like grass cloth.
Finish: Most removable wallpapers have either a matte or glossy finish, with the former typically being more versatile as it won't create glare with sunlight. When choosing the right finish, consider your wallpaper placement as well as the finish of any paint that will remain exposed in the room. "For instance, if I'm doing a room in a high-gloss finish, I also like to use a glossy wallpaper to keep the look cohesive," Okin says.
Upkeep: If you're hanging removable wallpaper in a busy area of your home, choose a durable finish that's washable with soap and water. Or, if you need something that can withstand moisture, look for humidity-resistant designs. Vinyl is a great option on both fronts, says Okin.
Pattern Repeat/Match: This is the distance between a pattern before it begins to repeat. You'll need to know the pattern match type of your desired wallpaper before starting, so you have a better idea of how much product to order.
There are three main match types: random match (the easiest to work with as it doesn't require alignment of the seams), straight match (designed to match as long as you start each panel from the ceiling), and drop match (a bit tricker to configure since it requires each panel to line up both horizontally and vertically). Each manufacturer should note which match type you're dealing with.
How do you calculate how much wallpaper to order?
The short answer is, it depends on where you're ordering from. Some brands like Chasing Paper, 2Modern, and The Inside make it easy by including a square footage calculator on their product pages. Simply input the dimensions of your room into the tool, and it will tell you how much paper you need to purchase.
In some cases, though, you may need to calculate square footage yourself. To do this, measure the height and width of the space you want to cover in feet, and multiply the two numbers. Then, estimate the amount of wallpaper you'll need based on the dimensions listed for the roll in question. Just remember, as a rule of thumb, it's better to overestimate and buy a little extra wallpaper in case something goes awry. Even if you do everything perfectly and are left with excess, you can always repurpose it for another project—say, to give a kitchen hutch a new backsplash or revive an old dresser with fresh door panels.
How do you apply removable wallpaper?
Think of removable wallpaper as one giant sticker, but don't forget to do the prep work. According to Okin, this is the most important step of all. Start with a clean surface—any dust or paint blobs will show under the paper—and make sure it's fully dry before you begin application.
While some peel-and-stick wallpapers are easy to apply on your own, others—such as those with more intricate patterns or that you're using to cover a larger area—will require at least two sets of hands on deck. "Follow the instructions to a T and reach out to a paper hanger if you have questions," suggests Okin. Work slowly from the top down, peeling off the backing straight and removing any air bubbles using a smoothing tool. Lastly, use a utility knife to trim the ends and make any final adjustments.

How do you remove peel-and-stick wallpaper?
Start at a corner section and gently peel back the paper, moving slowly to avoid rips and removing any paint from the wall. You can use a sharp tool to get under the edge if you're having trouble getting a good grip, but overall, this should be the easiest part of the process.
